Do the Talk and Walk the Walk in Sustainability

With “Sustainable Museums” in 2019 and “Sustaining Our Museums in a Challenging World” in 2021, IATM set a focus on museums and climate change during its conferences already. What has changed since then other than the climate?

Luckily, a lot: Museums have moved even further from raising awareness through exhibitions to becoming important advocates, voices and most of all taking tangible actions themselves. For example, some exhibitions have sparked (more focused) developments in the institutions themselves such as the Museum of Communication Bern’s “Planetopia”. Additionally, several international and national cultural associations have published valuable resources and guidelines.

This article aims to provide an overview of the resources currently available. Especially from IATM’s member institutions and the “big players” in the museum sector.
